Development of the future engineering workforce is a key objective for Bentworth Investments. This week representatives attended the University of Nairobi to meet with Petroleum Engineering students. The talk covered the following main areas:
- About Bentworth – The role we play in the oil and gas sector in Kenya and details about what we do as a company, and the opportunities available to graduates and undergraduates in the sector.
- Application pitfalls – Our team have reviewed many applications, from graduates, looking for employment and undergraduates looking for internships. There are a number of common challenges we have identified that people face when putting together applications. Here we have summarised a few highlights.
- Be an Engineer first and a Petroleum Engineer second – This section covered how students can position themselves first as engineers. It was a reminder to think outside the box and not focus too narrowly on working in the petroleum industry because that is the main focus of their studies. All engineers develop exceptional problem solving and analytics skills among others, all of which are transferable to other sectors within the engineering field.
- Society of Petroleum Engineers – Students were advised of the benefits of joining the society, specifically because it offers access to published work from industry specialists and also unparalleled opportunities to network, obtain mentorship opportunities and broaden ones outlook to much more that is available outside the petroleum industry.
